The late fall of 2009 Sima Environmental Inc., entered into a marketing agreement with Hadronex, Inc. to market the Smartcover ultra-sonic flow monitoring system. Initially designed primarily for prevention of SSO's (sanitary sewer overflows) our customers have brought us a multitude of other practical uses for the system. While the prevention of sanitary sewer overflows remains a top priority, we are very aware of the ever decreasing budgets and strain on personnel.
The Smartcover can be used in a plethora of cost savings ways, such as;
* Predictive maintenance device: Through flow level monitoring, the unit will help you determine when cleaning is necessary. Flow levels will remain fairly constant outside of rain events, until blockages begin to develop. As the average daily flow levels begin to rise, it indicates that a line may need to be cleaned. Rather than send crews and equipment out on a set schedule, now they can be maximized by only being sent out on an as needed basis.
* Flow trend analysis: Flow trends can used in multiple ways, including determining potential line capacity issues that may be occurring,
* Inflow and Infiltration Identification: Flow levels tend to rise immediately during a rain event, sometime dramatically(rain induced inflow) and then remain at a higher level for a period time after the rainfall(rain induced infiltration). The flow levels will rise with the components added to static flow(including static infiltration). By simply using the portable Smartcovers to a small percent of a basin, it can be determined if the need for a broader scale SSES(sanitary sewer evaluation study) is necessary without the use of much more expensive flow metering devices.
* Flow Monitoring: With its new technology, the Smartcover can measure to .1 inches of flow level depth at its most precise setting. With a proper Mannings and slope inputted, a rough value of flow can be developed(approximately 8-10% +/- . While it isn't the level of accuracy a flow meter will offer, it's extremely low cost of operation and maintenance allows it to be used for years at a fraction of the cost.
* Primary or Secondary Lift Station Alarm: With no external power source needed, the unit can serve as a secondary backup to float alarms which often malfunction/get caught or as a primary alarm

Rainfall data can be added to the typical flow level charts provided on the units website allowing for I/I levels to be determined. Unlike flow meters, very little maintenance is needed with the Smartcover. It also is transportable to most locations, and man entry is not required. The unit is owned by the municipality and cost a fraction of what short term rentals of traditional flow meters costs.
